Were you actually able to update to 6.1 or did you stick with your previous os? I have been trying to update 2 jailbroken iPad 3s. I keep ending up with error -1 on both of them. I have tried everything. All I can do is use Redsn0w to re-restore 5.1.1. this tells me that there is not really a hardware issue as error -1 typically indicates. I would really love to get these iPads updated to 6.1 if anyone can help.

Yes, I did update to 6.1. You will need to downloand the 6.1 separately and use redsnOw to restore. Hope it works for you.

I have tried that. Once I get to a progress meter on the iPad, Redsn0w tells me that it cannot close a compressed (IPSW) file and quits.

Help Ipad 2 previously jail broken tried to update and now stuck in the middle. When I try to restore I get either unknown error 36 or 6. Have tried about 10 times and no luck.

Have you tried the tutorial in the first post of this thread? If you follow all the steps exactly, you should end up with a functioning iPad on the current version of iOS.

Yes have followed the steps multiple times. I was getting a few of the most common errors but have since solved those problems just always end up with a error 6 or 36 at the end of the restore cycle.

FYI, took it to the genius bar yesterday, they thought it might be hardware related and offered me a trade in. Guess that might be my best option

If you follow every step of the tutorial, without modifying a single step in any way, you should not be getting these errors.

Are you running any kind of anti-virus software on your computer? If so, disable it while attempting the tutorial.

An error 6 or 36 often points to something on your PC not playing nice. As sci-fan said, anti-virus etc. needs to be turned off. Be as agressive as you can. i.e quit every task you can possibly quit on your PC before trying it again.
