hi! I posted this in the Cydia tutorial for beginners thread a while ago, but this thread seems to be more active, so i'm trying my luck here.
I have a question about safety (looked around a bit on the forums and couldn't find an answer.) Is jailbraking safe for your data? I'm thinking, can't developers of jailbreaks and/ or of the apps that you install from Cydia use them to steal your personal data? Because I kinda have a feeling they might, but on the other hand, so many people are jailbreaking...
Will appreciate some info on this.
Thanks.

It is relatively safe. If an evil person wants to develop something evil to steal your data they will. The upside is that the jailbreak community will never allow evil apps into the mainstream. Therefore, you would have to be reckless in order to fall foul of evil people by going out of your way to add untrusted sources to your device and installing obscure software. Ive been jailbreaking for 5 years. AFAIK in that time there has been one malicious piece of software and the community acted so swiftly it was never allowed to do any damage.Originally Posted by Favleey

help help help.hi i am a nooby,i have a ipad 1,running on 3.2.1 and is jailbroken and works great,i want to up grade to 5.0.1.can i do that while it is jailbroken or do i need to unjailbreak first and then rejailbreak once upgraded, also i have some apps that i would like to save,i have heard that if i use pgk backup i can save in contacts and restore after, and that i can send to my iphone as contact to save on there as well.i am not tech minded so if anyone can help in basic terms ,i would be eternaly greatfull, lol.
First, yes, you are going to have to upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 before jailbraking it again. However, that is only is you have saved SHSH blobs for that version. I am going to assume you do because your iPad1 is already jail broken, so those blobs should be saved. Hopefully, my assumption is right because you will not be able to do any of this if you don't have those blobs...
So, follow the process in this link to see (1) if you have the SHSH blobs and (2) get them download and put on your computer for later use: http://www.ipadforums.net/jailbreaking-hacking-tutorials-how-guides/69285-tutorial-downgrade-ipad1-5-0-1-using-shsh-blobs-redsn0w.html#post491479
Once you have iOS 5.0.1, then you can follow the steps in this post. The link to this post is also at the bottom of the link I just provided, so you won't "lose" it should you navigate away from this thread.
Good luck and do let us know how you get on.

Thank you for your very helpful tutorial. Ever since Comex's jailbreakme.com technique in Summer 2011, I have been happily enjoying my cydia apps on my iPad 1. When iOS 5.1 came out, i began to wait for an untethered JB IOS 5.1. Eventually I decided to go Tethered, using redsn0w, following your tutorial. After thumb and finger trouble, 3 times, I got the DFU PROCEDURE to work, as you specify. I am now up-to-date with all of my preferred Cydia apps, but I am wondering "what's new since IOS 4.3.3 on my iPad 1"?
BTW re "tethered restart"' I just keep my battery st 100%, via a USB power source. hopefully, I wont have to do the DFU thumb dance for many a day.
