When met such problem, we usually can refer to Google search. Such as Google search: "iTunes asking for backup password". There will be lost of solutions for us!
I had the same sort of problem. Somehow when I decided to do an ipad synch by cable the machine told me I had to install a software update. I wasn't really paying too much attention, so I just clicked through on the "OK" button and then suddenly found it had done a complete factory restore, and all my data was gone. I thought "no problem", I'll just do a restore from a recent backup. That's when it started asking for the dreaded password. I know all my passwords, but each time the machine would turn the hourglass for a few mins and then tell me the password was wrong. Finally I cracked it.
Ipad Password: Wrong!
iMac Password: Wrong!
iTunes Password: Right!
So there you have it. It seems it is asking for your iTunes password.
I hope this helps someone else, and if it does, please post here!
I've the identical problem; I do believe it's asking for the encryption password, though in my case, could not recall encrypting the backup and I haven't entered it in Splash ID. I ended up using an external program to decrypt the password – "iPhone Backup Unlocker" It worked like a charm. I only downloaded its standard version. With that it gave me the first three letters and the rest were blocked out with ***. The result is just as 123***. This however was enough for me to recall the password.
Hope my experience also helps you!
I also got a similar problem about iTunes asking for a backup password. At that time I was so confused and I fele regret and I asked myself why I encrypted the iTunes backup password and then lost it. But that was realy what I don't want to see. I just need to find out the iTunes backup password.
I even Google searched "iTunes asking for backup password" and tried every method they asked. But it seemed that I was not so lucky, none of them helped. Finally I had to use a tool named SmartKey iTunes Backup Password Recovery. I don't know what you think of it but it worked for me! It helped me figure out my iTunes backup password easy, quickly and successfully!
