It all depends on what your personal computing needs are. Other people can and do get along without a PC.

Exactly. And not having a PC in the house makes it easier to not bring work home. Need to do that more.

I have been trying to find ways to do everything on tablets for the past 18 months. 99% is pretty straightforward. The hard thing, believe it or not, either on Android or iOS is the insistence of either Google or Apple that their OSs are "mobile" & not fully functional OSs - despite the grunt of the hardware.

EG - no file management on iOS or no really stable & reliable browser on Android - most Android "power users" HAVE to run three or four browsers just to be abke to get various sites to work!

Untill ipads increase the storage this wont be an option, my current laptop has 1 terrabyte, (1000 gbs) which Ive used 60% of so far, lots of music, 100 movies, and about 60 tv shows, also loads of audio projects and graphics etc, the largest ipad is 64gb????? also often the apps are not as good as their computer counterparts. So IMO my ipad is an accessory to my laptop, more used for coffee shops, and travel etc.

I believe another major limitation is the lack of MS Office.

As AdmiralAdama said, you'll probably need more horsepower and storage; in that case, I might go with the MacBook Air. If it's more for fun, iPad.

If you have a need for music, movies, tv shows, or similar projects, you are right, the iPad does not have enough resident storage. But I use mine for text only, for the most part. I make a point of storing no music on it (well, 3 classical albums just in case I get stuck somewhere), no movies, and no tv. So it is basically a typewriter with access to Dropbox. And for that it works just fine. The bottom line is that Dropbox or a similar cloud storage system is essential if you want to use the iPad for heavy lifting. There is no way around it. But Dropbox raised its storage capacity ($99/year) from 50 gigs to 100 gigs to match Google. And it is my file storage.

I got rid of my cell phone and pay about $8 per month for a Skype connection with a local number, and use my ipad as an answering machine. The savings will pay for Dropbox in 1.5 months.

    Interesting discussion.

For me, the only things I cannot do with tablets that I might want to do are...
    1. Rip my dvd's /blurays to create a digital library & release cupboard space
    2. Backup to iTunes on a pc/mac

Given that 2 can be fulfilled through iCloud & 1 would take 100s of hours anyway, I am not unhappy about it

I have recently been reading about NAS here & elsewhere. Now that gives me almost infinite storage space for our photo's, home movies (taken digitally), pdfs etc. My first step into that is to attach a £25 / $35 64gb usb stick to my router - works great
