I apologies if it was posted already but I tried a search and could not find it so I decided to post it myself.
Today I used a freeware Windows app that removes lots of junk files from the iPhone and iPad memory and on my 32 GB iPad 1 it recovered 3 GB of space occupied by cookies, old temp files etc.
I am amazed by how good it has worked on my device, by the fact that I have never heard before of such a tool and, last but not least, by the fact that it's free!
If you want to have a look yourself, it's called PhoneClean (but it works on iPads as well).
