Is there a way to set a song as a ringtone? I don't want to buy a ringtone. So is there a app to make them from songs I already have purchased?

Yes. There are several apps in the app store that allow you to generate ringtones from content in iTunes.
I've had success with "Ringtone Maker".

With 10.x you can create ringtones on your computer in iTunes. I do it, but here is a link with pics to help explain - it really is 10, not 9 and never using 9 I don't know if this procedure slingshots well into the past.

Just use garage band to cut what part of the song you wish to use as a ring tone and save it as a ring tone. Works easily.
