HELP NEEDED...Brand new Ipad does not turn on--Apple Refuses To Help

I hope you folks can give me advice. I received a new 32G, Verizon Ipad as a gift in February 2012. Because I am very busy and never had the time, I first opened the celophane last week while on the phone with verizon about my girlfriend's Ipad. My new one would not turn on except for with the wall charger and had repeated message of "Restore Needed". It also would not sync with the desktop.

After a phone call with customer service, they arranged for an appointment at the Apple Store. Manager at Apple Store refused to help, refused to repair, and refused to replace.......saying that it is out of warranty. I had not even removed the plastic wrapping and had the celophane from the box. Manager was rude and nasty.

I spoke to the people that gave me the gift and they paid $749 at the Apple Store, have the receipt and feel terrible. Despite it being brand new and never working, Apple treated me like I was dirt on the street. What do I do??????????? Any suggestions????????

    1. Did you charge it?
    2. Any other Apple Store nearby? (BTW, where are you from (which reagion/ state/ country)?)
    3. Did you tell the above to customer service on the phone (afterwards, of course)?

Also the Apple online help might be a place to search for solutions, like http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4097
So, if you did not charge it yet, do for a while, then proceed as per the link I posted...

Please be so good and post back if something changed/ it worked out/ you had further things going on with Apple customer care or the Apple store, as this is for sure interesting for other IPF users to know about...

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

Well this is very unusual indeed, both the fact that the iPad doesn't work and the Apple store Managers attitude. iPads come already charged and I'm wondering if by sitting dormant for so long this has caused something, the battery may have discharged itself and that's not a good thing from what I've heard. Yes as hpulmer has suggested put it on charge and let us know what happens. I would also try another store about this too.

Please do not post twice on any issue, as well as dividing any info given it is also against Forum Rules, your other post has now been deleted.

Why would it no longer be under warranty if you received it in February? The warranty is for one year. Something doesn't feel right about what's been posted.

Thanks to everyone that has replied so far. Here are the answers to help clarify your questions:

    1. I charged the new Ipad overnight after unwrapping it. It did not take the charge. It appears that it lost the entire charge from sitting in the box.

    2. I spoke with the client of mine that gave it to me. The purchased 12 of them in May 2011, but gave them as gifts over the next 9 months. I received mine in February 2012. I only opened it last weekend.

    3. I am in NYC and we have several Apple stores here. I have been in touch with a supervisor at customer service and they are saying that it can be treated as a trade-in and charge me $250 for a new one. It seems rather unfair since the product NEVER was even turned on and now does not work. A manufacturer should stand behind their product. The Ipad even still has the plastic on it.

    4. I asked them to repair this one and the answer is that they do not repair Ipads....only exchange them and use the bad one for parts.

All replies and suggestions are appreciated!!!!

Keep in mind, while you received it in February 2012, it was purchased May 2011, which means the warranty was up May 2012. I can see where they are coming from with regards to this. I do not know when you first took it in to the Apple Store, but if it was after May 2012, you are out of luck. Can't understand why you waited from February to August to open the iPad. Sucks, I know.

$250 for a brand new iPad is one helluva deal, any way you cut it. Especially for a 32G 3G model, which new would cost nearly $750 ($650 for the iPad 2). This also would mean you would have a brand new or refurbished product that now has the full 1 year warranty. Personally, I would take this deal and get the iPad.

Agree, but I doubt you will get a full years warranty, more like 3 months which is what I received when they replaced my iPhone 1 month inside warranty. Don't know whether you'll get warranty at all as your warranty has expired.

But a little creative thinking here

If an iPad is stored for any length of time they recommend it be with at least 40% charge. I would say that yours has depleted the charge and this has killed your battery. I have heard a battery replacement is around $100.00. But is this all that is wrong here, I can't say but it points to the battery. How do you replace a battery, here again I've heard they swap out your iPad for a refurbed model which is what you are likely to get for your $250.00. It is true they don't fix an iPad they just replace it.

I would go back to another store and have another chat with a Manager about this.

Seems to me if you get them to replace the battery, you will get a new refurbed iPad for around $100.00
If you take what they are offering, you will get a new refurbed iPad for $250.00.
Same thing just different prices. I could be totally wrong here, it's just what I've heard.

A little cheeky perhaps but if it's only the battery....well....

I agree with leelai about it just being the battery. Because the ipad was allowed to flatten so completely, it will not take a charge from the wall charger. BUT there is a small chance that you can get it functioning again.

Connect your iPad to a PC or Mac USB port. You will need to ensure that the PC or Mac are switched on. Leave the iPad connected for 24 hours - the low rated trickle charge (.5amp - 2.5w) - may well get enough charge into the battery for it to be able to be charged by the wall charger. After the 24 hours, connect it to the wall charger for 12 hours.
If it has worked, your iPad will be good to go.

Your warranty started when the device was sold, hence you being told what you were. And the reason Apple will not "stand behind their product" is because in this case the product has been abused. How? By allowing the battery to go so flat through non-use that it cannot be charged in the normal way. This is not Apples fault.

Hope this helps, & your iPad becomes usable. Its a sad waste if it isn't
