I am a new user and can not always go backwards on a screen... Is there a secret?

What app are you talking about? If it's Safari, then remember that some links open in a new screen and so there is, technically, no previous screen. To return to the screen where the link originated you need to touch the icon that shows the 'overlapping screens' with a number on it (the number of screens) and then select the page that the original link was on.
