Although the iPad's native Mail app cannot directly generate formatted text - colour, font, font size etc - it can interpret HTML-formatted text. So a workaround to enable you to send formatted text yourself is to use an HTML editor app and then copy-and-paste the resulting text into Mail.

Copy-and-paste or cut-and-paste is an operating system function, so it's supported by all apps.

When you have a field of text that you want to copy-and-paste, hold your finger down somewhere in the text you want to copy. After a second a pop-up box will appear with options such as 'Select', 'Select All' etc.

If you simply want to copy all the text, then choose 'Select All' and all the text will be highlighted and you'll be offered other options, such as 'Copy' or 'Cut'.

If you only want to select part of the text then, instead of choosing 'Select All' earlier, choose 'Select' and the word that you had your finger on will be highlighted and two vertical bars - one at either end of the word - will appear. You can 'drag' these bars to increase or decrease the selected text. It takes a bit of practice to begin with to get it right. Then, once you've highlighted the text you want, choose 'Copy'.

When you're in the iPad's native Mail app, start a new email and then press and hold your finger in the message area. Again, a pop-up box will appear and one of the offered options will be 'Paste'
