When I use gmail on my Ipad, I do not see the contacts that I created on the notebook. How can I get my gmail contacts on Ipad?

This is one area where Android really shines. I'm surprised Apple doesn't make this easier. When you sent up the mail client as a gmail account by giving it your name and password, one would think you would get the contacts imported into your iPad. Weird.

I don't want my gmail contact list imported - there are 6500 names there... It's remotely hosted by google and I can still access them just fine from my iPad.
