Can Mail and Safari download/upload files?

As per the subject, can Mail and Safari download/upload files, and allow access to them via iTunes file sharing?

I'd like to use an iPad for primary Internet access, and will have the fairly regular need to exchange files with a desktop system for editing.

    Thanks!

Using Mail you can download files and open them in a compatible app - such as Apple's 'Pages' (.doc, .docx).

From Pages you can email documents in, say, .doc format.

Safari can download certain sorts of files - primarily photos and PDFs - but not Word documents.

    Safari cannot upload any files.

However, there is a third-party app - GoodReader - that can download any type of file and then, using the iPad's operating system (iOS) 'Open In' facility, open the downloaded file in a compatible app.

Another - and possibly simpler - way of handling file transfer to and from a PC is to use cloud storage and the iPad supports Apple's MobileMe iDisk cloud storage server and using that, it's possible to transfer files to and from the iPad using compatible apps - Pages, say - and upload them to iDisk from your PC using a conventional PC web browser.

    Tim
