Might be a bad or loose cable. Make sure all you connections are solid, and try another USB port on the computer just for good measure.
Also, restart the computer and iPad, to eliminate possible problems along that line.
iPad: Turning on/off and resetting
If that does not fix it a call to Apple wouldn't be out of line, or a visit to a store of you are close enough. Be sure to take your cable with you as well, so they can test it.
