It is a known issue with iPAD. I have about 3% failures with PDF files I download from the Internet ( many Magazines). If it one that I do like, I just perform a print to PdfFactory, that reproduce a PDF file, and now it can be viewed with the iPAD.
Seems that the iPAD is much more sensitive to the PDF format, then any regular cheap PC

The file works on Adobe Reader on my laptop, but iBooks is unable to display it.
I tried to view it on other readers such as stanza, Cloud reader, and Easy PDF, but they didnt work either.
The PDF is displayed with blank pages, in all of the apps.
Can someone help me out ?
OK - a first question. Do other PDF files read OK and is it just this particular file that's a problem? If, suddenly, your iPad is unable to read any PDF file then the solution may be to turn the iPad on and off....using the method below..

However, it really sounds as though there's an issue with the PDF file. The PDF format has evolved over the years and some readers - particularly the 'stripped down' versions on the iPad - can't read some of the newer formats.

But turning the iPad on and off is an easy first step...

OK - so here we go -

The easiest first way to try to solve ‘unexplained’ or ‘unusual’ problems with the iPad is:-

Restart the iPad. Press *and hold* the Power button. After a couple of seconds a slider control will appear asking you to confirm that you really want to switch the iPad off (this is all you’ll be doing). Slide the control to accept. A rotating white ‘bezel’ will appear in the iPad screen as the iPad powers down (it takes a few seconds, just like it would if you were shutting down your PC). When the screen of the iPad has gone completely blank, press *and hold* the Power button for a couple of seconds until the white Apple logo appears and the iPad starts to power up. This takes several seconds, so be patient. During the power up the automatic screen orientation function is disabled, so don’t panic. A few seconds before the power up is complete, the iPad plays a little ‘jingle’ and then you’re back to the Home screen. Restart the iPad’s app and see if the problem persists. Apple (and Forum members) recommend that you power down your iPad at least once a week, just as you might regularly completely switch off your PC. The normal procedure of just briefly pressing the Power button of the iPad merely puts it to ‘sleep’. Most Forum members have found that one of the two methods I’ve mentioned here cure a whole bunch of unexplained problems and are an easy first step to resolving most anything that happens on the iPad.

If the PDF is not confidential, send me a Private Message and I'll send you my private email address and I can try to read the PDF file on my iPad. Otherwise, try to find a non-contentious PDF file that suffers the same problem and send it to me.

We'll try to do whatever we can to help...

You should add that reset info to your sig as I've seen you post that countless times..lol. So you won't have to keep rewriting it all the time. It is good stuff though. I'm just kidding around with ya, Congrats again on being a Moderator, Tim ;-)

My iBooks worked very well previously. But after I updated into iBooks ver 1.2.2 (351), it cannot read the whole PDF files. I tried to open the PDF files in iFiles and it worked but I prefer use my iBooks accordingly. Any suggestions?

Did you try the reset tip I mentioned above? That usually fixes problems like this. If not, are there only some PDF files that you cannot read or does this problem affect all of them?

Thanks for your quick response Tim. I did your suggestion but it didn't work anyway.
I couldn't read the whole PDF files... I was thinking maybe my iBooks had some problems after I updated...
Can't wait for the next update for my iBook...or maybe it's better for me to delete my iBooks and reinstall it again. What do you think?

Sounds like you may need to reinstall iBooks.

But first, go into iTunes on the computer and make sure all your books are in the Books library. If not, you'll want to transfer your books to iTunes first, to avoid losing anything. You can always re-download the ebooks, but PDF files or book other than ones bought through the iBook Store might be lost.

If you normally sync your iPad to iTunes, you can skip the next step if you like. Though it is handy, since it will give you more control over when the iPad syncs and does backups.

Without the iPad connected, go into iTunes, open Preferences, and in the Devices tab turn off auto-syncing.

Now, with our iPad connected, right click on the iPad under Devices and choose Transfer Purchases. Double check the Books library to make sure they are all now there. If not, then go to the Books tab at the top of the screen and make sure syncing is turned on, and try again.

Once you are sure that all you books and PDF's are safely stored in iTunes, disconnect your iPad from iTunes, delete the app, go to the App Store and install it again.

With the app successfully installed, connect the iPad back to iTunes and select it under the Devices list. Go through all the tabs and make sure the sync settings are what you want them to be. Unless you never or seldom sync, you should probably leave them alone for now, just so you don't end up doing too much at one time. Do not turn off anything you normally sync in order to speed things up. This will remove that content.

Make sure you are set to sync all the books you want on the iPad and sync.

    When you are ready, sync.

Note: If you make use of the highlight and notes features of iBooks, you will probably lose that stuff this way. The only way to avoid that while when removing and reinstalling the app would be to do a backup before deleting the app and then a restore from backup after reinstalling the app.

here is an example of PDF that would show up as white pages on the iPAD.
It will show up perfectly on a PC.
That is one of the known problems with the iPad

export as jpeg and create new pdf

I had a similar problem with a scanned book downloaded from internet. I was able to see it in MAC but in Ipad all pages appeared as white.

I tried using the "optimizing" feature of adobe PDF but it worked only partially, I was able to see some random pages in the ipad. Then I tried to use the preflight option of adobe which supposedly fixes pdf according to standards but then the displaying in the ipad was painfully slow, loading a page would take 10 seconds or more.

What I did finally was export every page to jpeg in good quality using adobe acrobat, and then create a new pdf mixing all the pages. This time it works and I can see it in the iPad all right.

    Good luck

You could shorten your time by printing it to an application like PDFfactory, that create a PDF file instead of really printing. I mentioned it on one of the previous replays

    Hi,
Is there any version of PDF not readable by iBooks? I've added all my PDFs in iTunes library but after syncing with iPad, it shows only some but not all the PDFs, anything i need to do to make this work? Thanks...
