    PDFs - problem with graphics

    I am having trouble with graphics in PDFs. Often, they are corrupted both when I use quick view in email or when I use GoodReader. These are PDFs which I have received by email and which appear fine on my PC.

    Is there something about email on the iPad or the settings I am using which is causing the problem? Or is it something about the PDFs themselves which is causing it? Would I get around the problem if I used something other than email to get the PDFs onto my iPad?

    It is a real shame because the graphics look great when they are ok.

    OK - I don't want to get your hopes up.....

    but.....

    OK - have you (a) tried iBooks? You can open them from email or GoodReader by pressing and holding until the 'Open in' menu comes up...

    if all else fails


    The easiest first way to try to solve ‘unexplained’ or ‘unusual’ problems with the iPad are:-

    Force the offending app to close. If you have iOS 4.2 double-press the ‘Home’ button to bring up the multi-task bar at the bottom of the screen. Press *and hold* any icon until they start to ‘jiggle’. Then tap the top left-hand corner of the app that you want to close. It will ‘disappear’ from the list. Don’t panic - you’ve not deleted it, just closed it. Now tap the Home screen and the multi-task bar will disappear. Re-open the iPad’s app and see if the problem has resolved itself. If not, it’s on to possible solution number two!!
    Restart the iPad. Press *and hold* the Power button. After a couple of seconds a slider control will appear asking you to confirm that you really want to switch the iPad off (this is all you’ll be doing). Slide the control to accept. A rotating white ‘bezel’ will appear in the iPad screen as the iPad powers down (it takes a few seconds, just like it would if you were shutting down your PC). When the screen of the iPad has gone completely blank, press *and hold* the Power button for a couple of seconds until the white Apple logo appears and the iPad starts to power up. This takes several seconds, so be patient. During the power up the automatic screen orientation function is disabled, so don’t panic. A few seconds before the power up is complete, the iPad plays a little ‘jingle’ and then you’re back to the Home screen. Restart the iPad’s app and see if the problem persists. Apple (and Forum members) recommend that you power down your iPad at least once a week, just as you might regularly completely switch off your PC. The normal procedure of just briefly pressing the Power button of the iPad merely puts it to ‘sleep’. Most Forum members have found that one of the two methods I’ve mentioned here cure a whole bunch of unexplained problems and are an easy first step to resolving most anything that happens on the iPad.

    This is unusual behavior for the iPad. Most PDF files display fine. If you have a sample pdf that is safe to share, give us a link and we can check it out.

    Thanks. iBooks doesn't seem to improve things and I'm beginning to think that the problem lies in the way I create the PDFs as they are converted from Word documents. I'm going to experiment using PowerPoint and Word (I have to use a PC for work, rather than a Mac) with different Apps rather than creating my own PDF docs.

    As twerppoet suggests, this is definitely unusual behaviour. If you continue to have problems, then post a link to a PDF file that's giving a problem as he suggests. Presumably these files display OK on your PC using Acrobat Reader or something similar? For sure, complex formatted Word documents often have 'problems' when being read by an iPad 'Office' compatible app - such as Pages or Docs2Go - but PDF has usually been OK.

    Are you using the MS Word 'Save As' menu and then choosing PDF as the output format? I've found that does a great job usually....

    Yep. Seems like Not all PDF Files can be read on iPAD

    I noticed few times that Magazines in PDF format came up with blank pages on the iPAD.
    Same file when you open it on a PC , every thing is fine. I wander what could be the reason. Is there a different kind of PDF reader on the iBook application ?
    I'll find a link of such a magazine and post it later.

    Any way as far as PDF goes.
    PDF versions are now defined by ISO and not Adobe. ISO 32000 is equivalent to Adobe's PDF 1.7, Adobe is not producing a PDF 1.8 Reference. Adobe is publishing a document specifying what extended features for PDF, beyond ISO 32000-1 (PDF 1.7). Documents containing extended features still carry the PDF base version number 1.7.
