This seems so obvious...

One thing I would die for is an "Auto Wifi" feature/tweak so that I don't have to open up an app, search for a possible open wifi network and hit connect because it'd automatically find the nearest wifi network without password protection and connect to it, in the background. No pop-up window asking you which network you want to connect to, that takes too long.

While you're out and about with the iPod you'll know if there is a non password protected wifi network nearby just by looking at your status bar. No more questions. This would be helpful for people who want to use an iPod or iPad as their primary phone using apps like Skype or Textfree etc. etc.

I'm sure it could be disabled while you're sitting at home or office on your own network, and enabled when you leave so that it's not constantly searching and draining your battery.

Does something like this already exist on Cydia? If not, why not?

I don't understand as the stock iPad already does this. If you set it to 'Join known networks automatically' the iPad will automatically, and without prompting, join a network that is 'known' - i.e. one to which it has previously been connected.

I think he want's an auto leech into unprotected networks without having ti accept then.

I'd think if anyone did that they could be exposing their own data to be compromised.

Just because a network is shown as 'open' in WiFi it might be MAC filtered, allowing only known machines to use it, in the UK we have BT fone, that looks open but you need a network (not router) user name and password to join the network at their hotspots (which many are actually consenting BT clients private routers).

I'm no programmer, but given the above i can see their are likely many problems writing such an app.

ipadbraincell is right - something that would automatically find an open network and connect to it, without it having to be a "known network".

I do understand that there could be security risks involved, but it'd be the same as if I were to just connect to an unknown and potentially "dangerous" network myself, wouldn't it?

thewitt - could something like this be configured to avoid TOS servers?

guess would be more the free hotspots requiring TOS, you can often hook into an unprotected hom,me even buisness networks just by selecting it, the o/pni think wants to avoid that step.


Tbh you get a free ride, don't mind you have to walk to then seat.

providers are being more responsible when providing the router by setting them as closed. BT have a removable plate that has the WiFi key on it, very simple for non technical people to follow.

Be aware anyone not securing their network can have anyone leech and download all sorts of stuff, you could be risking a tap on the door from the Police having had pirate movies downloaded by a guy on a laptopnoutside. even child porn or terrorist data downloaded and traced to you address.

The TOS server does not announce itself as such, neither does the "open" network that is secured by MAV address and no password.

The only thing a program could do was attach to each open network in turn and attempt to access a specific location, timing out when it fails and moving on to the next one in line.

Could take many attempts to locate an open network.

Recently in the Hong Kong airport I was able to see more than 20 wifi hotspots however only one of these was really public, and it required a TOS be accepted in the end.

It would also require Jailbroken phone and likely the use of undocumented APIs
