Cool Help syncing to new PC

I've got an issue that may not be unique but I just can't find the answer for, here.

I've been syncing my Ipad 2 since I bought it, to itunes on a Windows 7 PC (with no problem).
Now I am going to be traveling on a regular basis and would like to start
syncing to itunes on a laptop. I thought it would be straight forward. Back up the ipad to the laptop,
    or something similar.
If I try to sync to the laptop, all of my apps and other files disappear.

How can I get to keep all my stuff in the ipad and sync to a new device?

I thought by authorizing the second unit it would be enough.
Do I have to copy the itunes folder fom one pc and paste it to the next?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    The Walrus.

This is what I did (admittedly on an Apple laptop rather than windows but should still work).....

Make a bootable clone of your current computers HD onto an external HD.
Boot you laptop from your external HD. You then have the choice of taking the external HD with your laptop or create a partition on your new laptops HD and clone the ext HD to it.

Following that everything should work on your laptop as it did on your current computer.
