How to store e-books on iPad which do not depend on an internet connection?

I was delighted to find and dl the "Free books" app, and I subsequently downloaded a number of classics which I was planning to read during an overland trip. Imagine my horror when I discovered that they were not accessible without a wifi connection! Can anyone recommend a way of starring books which is not Internet dependent? Thanks in advance.

How to store e-books on iPad which do not depend on an internet connection?

Could you not have downloaded them before losing/turning off your Internet access? I ask because I have an app called "Free Books" and, while it keeps the books online, there is a button to actually download the books to the iPad for offline reading. Most book apps do have the ability to download so that you can read offline...

We could be talking about different apps, though they may have the same name. So, if yours doesn't have a download feature, maybe look into the one I mentioned? It has all the classics.

I have both nook and bluefire readers on my IPad. Both allow you to "side load" ebooks, meaning you can copy them across to the iPad via iTunes. For both, the ebook must be stored on the iPad, ie neither lets you read an ebook online.

You might also want to look at Overdrive, another ereader app for library ebooks.

Sadly the iPad is so inconsistent about which apps can share files that I don't know whether you can side load ebooks through Dropbox, email or a browser.
