I have seen a prototype smart phone with a small projector, giving the ability to show a picture or video on a blank wall in a darkened room, it was about the size of a 19" tv screen. Could this be the reason for the extra hole?

It's an x-ray camera that allows you to see through walls.

NFC doesn't use a hole. It uses a loop antennae and a simple induction current for activation.

Link to one of many stories on tech blogs. I don't pretend to know; I figure these tech folks have a better idea, and they seem to have possible evidence.
