Books and PDFs disappeared, except for 1 PDF and 2 books. My books and PDFs appear on my iPhone 4, but since I had to format my computer hard drive, they did not reinstall in iTunes when I restored my account. Now, they only appear on the phone. I cannot get them back to iTunes, or iPad. If I say I want to sync books, iTunes tells me it will erase what's on my phone.

I have all the right things marked on the phone and pad, but nothing is syncing as it should. What am I missing?

You probably have two different libraries set up. One for your iPhone and the other for your iPad. When opening the Itunes app keep the SHIFT button depressed and a popup screen will ask which library you want to open. Select the library that corresponds with your device you want to sync. Then sync. The libraries are usually kept in your music folder so navigate from there.

Happens to me when reformatting HDD and reinstalling programs. Had to start from scratch re Itune. I'm not sure if restoring from a backup of your computer data will help but it's an option that you can try.

Firstly did you actually consolidate and then backup your iTunes library before the format of your computer, if not ?
Then you may have to start from scratch, item purchased can be downloaded again for free, but any content added manually if not on a backup is gone.
