Had a similar problem and as has been suggested by Bosvaark, contact your mail server provider, you will probably find that the port setting is what is causing the problem. That is exactly what it was in my case.

Thanks very much for the info , however I know this may sound unusual but I do not know what the SMTP should be . I am with virgin and I don't know what my port number should be. I am a complete novice at this.Originally Posted by Bosvaark

All you need to do is contact Virgin and ask for your email settings. They will give you your incoming mail setting, usually POP3, & your outgoing mail setting, SMTP together with your port settings for both. There is an article on Google which explains everything & gives the actual settings. I will send you the link. Only thing is, I believe this is for Virgin in the UK which is linked to NTLWORLD.
