Stolen iPad no longer listed under "my devices"

So I have been trying to locate my stolen iPad using "find my iPhone" for the past 2 weeks. The last time it showed up was the day after it was stolen and only for a minute. Today I decided to see if I could find anything out by playing with "manage my devices" under my account. Ironically, my stolen iPad is not listed as one of my devices. When someone wipes your iPad does this cause it to disappear from your list of devices?

I expect that they have wiped your device and it's now under their name. That's my theory anyway. Welcome to ipadforum.

If they have done so, is there any way I can manually add the device back to my ID using the serial number?

Hmm, well maybe this will help my case. I reported it stolen to the police. I work at an elementary school and we caught the person taking it from the school on a VERY poor surveillance system (could not make out the person's face). We are pretty sure of who took it, but the "locate my iPhone" app located it at an apartment complex which prevented the police from obtaining a search warrant. MAYBE if they connected the iPad to their own ID the judge will issue us a subpoena for Apple to give the ID of the person? I live in a small town, which on the positive side, gives a bit more attention to these smaller crimes than a larger city would. It's a long shot, but worth a try! Thank you for the responses!

Interesting. I've heard of cases where the police did retrieve the iPad using this app. Why did the police not get the search warrant? What stopped them?

They said because it was an apartment complex there were too many possibilities of it being someone else. (the apartment complex is where the sister of the person we think took it lives). Also, when questioned, the person denied taking it and denied seeing her sister that day. The police told me that if it would have located in a residential area with just a few houses, they would have gotten a search warrant.

What bad luck. And annoying. So what they are saying is that if you live in an apartment complex, and steal an iPad, you will get away with it? What about using the iPads number. Your school just have a record of that for security purposes.
