    Data and 3G question

    Hello,
I am new to the board and the Apple world and this is my first post. I come from a PC background so go easy on me.

Just purchased an IPad 2 for my wife and have a couple of questions:
    1. Is there a way to monitor how much data you are downloading and uploading when NOT working in a 3G environment?
    2. We will probably only use the 3G when traveling so will only buy for when we are on the road. Will use WI-FI, at home, otherwise. When you have a 3G account, can you turn off that feature? A case would be when we are on the road
but are using a WI-FI hotspot and don't need the 3G service. If we can do this, how?

I have learned a lot from reading the posts but I can tell I still have a long way to go.

Thanks, in advance, to anyone who will reply.

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

    1. When not on 3G you will need to find this info from your carrier, I can log on to mine and see the stats for this. But if you have other computers on wifi, it won't give a breakdown.I don't think there's a way on the ipad
    2. You can turn off 3G in Settings under Cellular Data. You will also find the Roaming setting here to turn off when travelling overseas.

There is an app called "Air Meter" on the Apple store, which I really know nothing about, but found there, with a description which suggests that it MIGHT be an answer to your needs. It is not clear if the data monitoring of 3g and WiFi is segregated. I just sent them an inquiry from their website, and will post back here if and when I get a response.

Here is the text of the response email I received a bit earlier.

    Hi Brian,

Both WIFI as 3G have their own independent cycle. Statistics and
usages are kept separate and each one is optional. Cycles can be
defined as small as a day or span multiple years, with everything in
    between.

    Hope this answers your questions.

    Kind regards,
    Serge
