Do I need anti virus software on my iPad and what is a good one?

No, you are fine without it.

Of the few anti-virus apps available for the iPad they are mostly educational; covering the basic do's and don'ts of life online. They couldn't detect and remove viruses from the iPad even if there were viruses for the iPad (which there are not).

There have been a couple of Trojans (apps with malware built in) for the iPad, but you would have to both jailbreak and leave the safe bounds of Cydia (main jailbreak store) to find them.
