To start, what is the video player app you downloaded from iTunes? Does it specifically say that at will play .mkv files? I use AVPlayer HD but I have not tried .mkv files, just video clips from my camera and wmv files and so on. I'd also try handbrake (free converting program) to try and convert it to see if there are issues with the mkv file itself.

This thread highlights the frustrating time you can have using video converters, been suckered so many times myself the promises they make fie ease and speed.
Agree with graywolf, never had a problem with handbrake when I did use it, great free program. I just got tired of having to convert so I bought AVPlayer HD.

For an hour SD video... I'd say about an hour or less.
