The specs say it will play .avi, but each file format is capable of a wider range of settings than the iPad can handle. So yes, it should play .avi files, with qualifications. Here are the specs, which I don't pretend to understand.
You may have better luck with a third party app like OPlayer, but no guarantees.Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format. -- from Apple's iPad spec site.Last edited by twerppoet; 07-23-2011 at 06:52 PM.

Try playimg the video in itunes on your pc. If it works, then it should work on your ipad
Or you could convert the file using handbrake
