like when I'm using an app and want to go back to the previous page.

You have to just click the Home button and exit out. If you double click it, then you see the row of open apps below...

If you single click on the home button that will take you back to the home screen. Double click and it will take you to multi-take menu. Hope that is what you are meaning.

I think the op means on most devices, there is a back button built into the hardware.

iPad doesn't.

Apps will usually have a button in the top left corner pointing left.
