    IPad display screen trouble

    My 14 month old IPad randomly has begun displaying the screen as faded colors, as if your printer is running out of ink. once it kicked back into regular view then right back to faded within 10 sec. a bit of flickering as well. when I turn it off or sleep the image is still there as a sort of shadow... Any ideas?

    It sounds like a hardware problem, unfortunately but - just in case (keeping my fingers crossed for you)...


    The easiest first way to try to solve ‘unexplained’ or ‘unusual’ problems with the iPad are:-

    Force the offending app to close. If you have iOS 4.2 or 4.3 double-press the ‘Home’ button to bring up the multi-task bar at the bottom of the screen. Press *and hold* any icon until they start to ‘jiggle’. Then tap the top left-hand corner of the app that you want to close. It will ‘disappear’ from the list. Don’t panic - you’ve not deleted it, just closed it. Now tap the Home screen and the multi-task bar will disappear. Re-open the iPad’s app and see if the problem has resolved itself. If not, it’s on to possible solution number two!!
    Restart the iPad. Press *and hold* the Power button. After a couple of seconds a slider control will appear asking you to confirm that you really want to switch the iPad off (this is all you’ll be doing). Slide the control to accept. A rotating white ‘bezel’ will appear in the iPad screen as the iPad powers down (it takes a few seconds, just like it would if you were shutting down your PC). When the screen of the iPad has gone completely blank, press *and hold* the Power button for a couple of seconds until the white Apple logo appears and the iPad starts to power up. This takes several seconds, so be patient. During the power up the automatic screen orientation function is disabled, so don’t panic. A few seconds before the power up is complete, the iPad plays a little ‘jingle’ and then you’re back to the Home screen. Restart the iPad’s app and see if the problem persists. Apple (and Forum members) recommend that you power down your iPad at least once a week, just as you might regularly completely switch off your PC. The normal procedure of just briefly pressing the Power button of the iPad merely puts it to ‘sleep’. Most Forum members have found that one of the two methods I’ve mentioned here cure a whole bunch of unexplained problems and are an easy first step to resolving most anything that happens on the iPad.

    Thanks Tim but none of your suggestions worked . The problem is not just one app but the entire screen even when I shutdown the slider is half red and half grey, all the icons look tie-died! UGH! thanks so much for your suggestions I am so disappointed in this product right now!

    Have you ever dropped your iPad or left it in a hot car? Anything that might have caused damage to the screen or the ribbon cables leading to the screen? Could even just be a software problem. I repair nintendo DS lites for a job an I find that screens that have color issues usually have been dropped or melted.

    I know this will sound weird, but bend and twist the iPad. Hold the iPad in landscape, put one hand on each side, and twist in opposite directions. (NOT TOO HARD!!!!!!! )

    Does the color change? Or does that have any effect? Try even pushing on the screen. (ONCE AGAIN, NOT TOO HARD! Only push as hard as you feel comfortable)

    Shake it!

    If any of that has an effect, there is physical damage to the screen, the cables, or the circuit board.

    Lisa, try taking it back to Apple, maybe it can be replaced.

    Shucks. I have done some DSi s too. Hate those though. The camera and LCD ribbon cable go through the same tiny hole in the hinge and are impossible to feed through. I do the work that machines do in Japan.

    14 months after? I am thinking a HUGE price must be paid for a repair.

    Thanks Everyone

    I have tried ALL your suggestions, and no luck. I took the ipad back to the Apple store and they replaced it!! even though I was 70 days out of my warranty. NO ONE in the place could figure out what was going on with it, they had never seen that happen before. SO just like donating you body to science ~ I donated my IPad back to Apple so they can figure it out! Thanks again!
