Weird, all my images retained the same Nikon name - the files were 'untouched' by IOS as the name, filesize etc. was identical to what was on the original card. Very handy.
Did you use any other apps?

1. It is an off-brand connection kit that I plug the sd card into.

2. I was looking at it via Photosmith

3. When I import the shots from the sd card to the computer the real file names are there.

Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t give any app access to the filenames stored on the iPad. We have tried many methods, including reading the filename from the EXIF data itself, but it’s simply not there (or not reliable), so Photosmith must generate it’s own filename.
There is a workaround- you can use the advanced sync process in Photosmith: Instead of transferring your photos over the WiFi sync, import them directly into Lightroom from the iPad (over the USB cable), and then perform the normal Photosmith sync process over WiFi. Photosmith will detect the existing photos (even with the correct name),

I have a 3rd party CCK as well. I plugged in the SD cards and then browsed the filenames on the iPad via my laptop when I got home. The filenames remained the same as they were from the camera.
How are you finding Photosmith?? Do you have any experience with Photogene or Filterstorm? I'm thinking Filterstorm will work fine for my needs but finding it hard to spend £9 on the Pro version which is what I would prefer since I would have a ton of use for the inbuilt library feature but it is still a nice to have all the same for all the batch operations. I wish they had lite versions to try them out as I promised I would stop buying multiple app and then have loads of them become redundant.

Donka, you are right.

I plugged the iPad into the computer and when I open up the folders they have the original file names - even the files that been opened using Photosmith.

We have a 3-week trip planned for September. Sure hope this gets fixed by then.

Next thing is to check whether the Photosmith keywords get ported over with the real filenames.

So far the lesson is that it's better to do a wired transfer.

Help me out here. If you can't profile the display on the iPad, how much utility is there in being able to view or edit raw files?

I'm not sure I know what you mean. Do you want the histogram? Photosmith does not do that. I think I've seen apps that do, though.

If you don't need colour calibrated images then this is a non issue e.g. For amateur use or even just as samples for review.

If you're not working with a profile, I would say that editing raw files is possibly a waste of time. You don't stand much chance of gettting WB right, for starters.

I don't see it as a waste of time. For personal use or for generating samples etc. then it is fine.
I agree you couldn't go do this route for finished professional work though.
