can it damage the screen in anyway if the display is constantly on for hours on end?

The iPad's screen cannot be damaged by being left on continuously. Indeed, Apple offer the option of showing a slide-show on the lock-screen, when your iPad is asleep.
The display technology used in the iPad screen is similar to that used in digital watches and it doesn't suffer from 'screen burn' like the older PC monitors used to. The backlight on the iPad is LED technology with a typical 100,000 hours life......

Any clock app recommendations then anyone?
