Just connect your ipad to your computer. Once it has detected, Open iTunes and select the "Photos" tab. Check the "Sync Photos" box at the top. From the drop-down menu next to that, select the program or folder that contains your photo library. Then just select the photos you want to transfer and drag them to your pc.
Another way is to get a photo backup program to transfer photos from iPad to Mac. And of course you can always google your question how to transfer photos from ipad to Mac tofind articles that may be of great help.

If your using a Mac, plug in your iPad> then open up Image Capture> the pictures should show up on the left hand side> Select the pictures you want> then download.
And you can refer this article about How to transfer or sync photo from iPad to Mac.

OK, I can download from Mac to iPad from Pictures folder (all pics of a selection of sub-folders)(ImageCapture is also handy to reverse the process).
What bothers me is that if I download from a different folder outside of Pictures, say from PICS on the desktop, it downloads, BUT it wipes out the photos already downloaded to iPad.
How do I stop this deletion of existing photos?

Image Capture comes with your Mac, is free, and will do what you need. It will recognize the iPad as a device and you can browse and select the images you want or do them all. If it is bombing out with all, do them in batches.

More information of transferring photos from iPad to Mac:
Step 1: Connect your iPad to the computer.
Step 2: Click "photo" icon to open iPad photo library folder and see all the iPad photo files are on the interface.
Step 3: Open iPad photo folder and search for the favourite photo you wanna transfer, and press "Export checked files to local" button.
Step 4: Press "Save" button to start iPad photos to Mac transferring.
    Done!
