hello im new and sorry i didnt use search button my internet is running slow.

i have a usb stick with loads of movies on and i have the usb to ipad adapter but what app can i use to play them. Im not going to jailbreak it.

Thanks for your question. The iPad's native 'Videos' app can play a wide range of movies; it depends what format they're in. Another good player that can handle a wide variety of formats is oPlayer - have a look at it in the app store.

If you let us know the format of the movies that you have on your USB stick, we can give you some better advice.

OK - you probably going to have to convert them to a format that the iPad can handle - there are numerous format converters available in the app store - some free and some you need to pay for. You'll see numerous discussions in the Forum on converting video files to play on the iPad and lots of advice on how to do this.

You forgot to say it also depends on the USB stick as some now refuse to be read on the newer firmwares.
I have 4 USB sticks that all worked fine on firmware 3.2.1 but since I updated to 4.2.1 they all now refuse to work coming up with a "the device uses too much power" error.
If anyone has found a way around this error I would like to hear it. The only way I know is to downgrade back to 3.2.1 as all 4.* firmwares have this error.

Ya, with the 4.x firmwares apple reduced the amount of current allowed to be drawn. People who were using multi media card readers for other formats besides SD cards discovered this change as well.

For the OP, another great free converting program is Handbrake. I have loaded a few movies directly onto my ipad and they play great. One thing to know is that there will be black bars above and below the movie due to the 4:3 aspect ratio as most movies are 16:9 these days. There is an icon in the upper right corner that will zoom in and make it so the movie plays on the entire screen but you will loose portions of the movie on both sides. The nice thing about jailbraking your ipad is that there are several apps that you can install that will not require you to convert the movies to a different format saving you all that time and hassle... just something to think about.

Someone just told me that I could transfer the movies from my iPad to some device and use some device to plug into my iPad to watch in an effort to clear up space. Excuse my ignorance but can anyone give me the proper names of devices aand where to purchase.

The iPad with laest firmware now can not read movies from USB stick. But it can read videos and photos from a MicroSD card with CCK.

First you need:
1) Apple Ipad camera connection kit (CCK)
2) USB memory stick (with no more than 4 Gb storage space)
3) Filebrowser on your Ipad (or other app that allows you to open and manage the photo library)
4) AVplayer on your Ipad (or other player that supports multiple video formats: avi, wmv, mp4, mkv etc.)

How it works

1) Create the folder DCIM on the USB drive
2) Insert the video file you want to copy into the folder DCIM on the USB drive
3) Rename the file as PICT0001 (next file must be PICT0002, and so on)
4) Insert the USB drive in CCK and then insert the CCK in Ipad
5) Ipad will automatically open the file in photo app
6) Import the video file in photo app; it appears there as blank white icon with "avi" on it
7) Now run filebrowser and open your photo library
8) Choose "imported", select the avi file and tap "open in", then select avplayer (or other player that supports this kind of files)
9) The video file appears in "inbox" folder of avplayer: now you can rename it as you wish, play or move it to 'documents" folder
10) Now you can remove the original file from photo library
