That's a guess. We don't have official figures yet. Someone should have a break down with days of the release, and we'll get some better ideas of what the iPad's got under the hood.
I agree with the general sentiment that what really counts is how well it works, but the geek in me likes to know what's inside too. And the coward inside me is willing to let someone else break their toy to find out.

You mean 512MB lol, but yes I'm very interested in seeing what's what before I take the plunge and sell my 1st gen and buy the 2nd gen.
I will wait for a ifixit teardown and maybe see what apps are released, but I'll probably want it as soon as I see it!

Best guess.
The iPod Touch 4th gen has 256MB RAM!

I've looked up the device use in the GarageBand movie images of the iPad 2 demo.
It's called the Apogee Jam. Luckily it is compatible with our beloved iPad 1.
I just hope it works with a microphone too...
I've snapped a picture while the movie played.

Great video editing software as well as synth composition software already exists for the iPad. I'm sure that apple's will be very pretty but don't think for a minute that your ipad1 is missing out on any functionality.
The reason these were made to appear as ipad2 features is because the ipad2 doesn't have many real new features. Maybe once ios5 comes out we will see real fragmentation

I think the lack of fragmentation (or at least much slower fragmentation) is a strength of the iOS vs Android.
Android has too many versions out at the same time, different UIs on different devices etc. that makes it harder to develop and keeps the app store from reaching the iOS level of selection despite Android having a larger overall install base from the latest articles I've seen.
Plus at $500 and up, these are devices that people want to see made obsolete every year. They're closer to PCs/Laptops that ideally we like to replace ever 3-5 years.

I stand corrected. I looked it up, and it appears my memory has been playing tricks on me. So, the only distinction appears to be whether the devices have cameras and A4 or faster processors.
At this point, I don't see why iMovie isn't available for the iPad 1 either.
Unless they failed to include code to detect and disable the camera when it isn't present. If they didn't and let you download the app then it would probably cause problems when people inevitable tried to use the non-existing hardware. That sounds unlikely, and easy to fix.
But that is just speculation. Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens, as usual.

This is a software and not a hardware restriction, here is how to circumvent it

Just because the original iPad might run iMovie, it doesn't mean you'd want to. My old Mac G4 ran FCP, but not well enough to be useable. For NLE in HD with realtime effects and transitions, the faster the computer the better.
