If you have wifi only iPad it uses wifi for location services. Apple's own database of known wifi locations.
Hm, excellent opportunity for an experiment.
If you've got a friend with an iPhone, or 3G iPad, have them come over and play on your network while using some location based apps. Let's see if or how long it takes your network to be added to the database.

Well if Apple was still using Skyhook you could manually add it to their database here:
Skyhook: How It Works > Submit Wi-Fi AP
I suspect these companies often share their data so it might still work--eventually. You will need the MAC ID of your wireless access point.
