Some PDFs that work well on the Mac, however, don't work on the iPad, or in iBooks. They do, however, work e.g. in BluefireReader. Any idea as to why this is and how convert them into a format that even Apple's app csn read?
GoodReader = very good PDF viewer and file management app with all kinds of little extras tucked away.
Google Reader = Web based RSS feed reader. Can be synced with a lot of good apps.
They are not the same thing, despite looking alike if you are reading a bit too fast.
my brother-in-law has recently published a book (non-fiction, technical) and has it for sale at Amazon.com in hardcopy format. It contains text, graphics, technical drawings, etc. He also has it in pdf format. In order to sell an electronic version at Amazon he must furnish a Kindle or ePub file.
Here is the problem. When he converts the pdf to ePub the formatting goes haywire. When he converts the pages as images, as some of the programs (xilisoft, doremisoft) do, the resulting pages are too small to be read. Is there a conversion app out there that can do this properly and fill the entire iPad screen? I haven't found one yet.
Converting from PDF to ePub is a stopgap method for the enduser with no good options. As an author your brother in law should instead go back to his base material and create an ePub version using the appropriate tools. It will look much better and be compatible with more readers.
what appropriate tools? the original content is in ms word 2007. don't offer a 50% solution, not all of us are as smart as you.
I'm not so smart. More important, I don't know everything (or even want to).
I don't use Windows, and I'm not an author. As such I only know that it's a bad idea to convert from format to format to format. It's almost impossible to control the results that way.
As for my 50% solution, as my grandma used to say "Beggars can't be choosers".
Try Google and do a little research. It's your question. Own it.

Your brother in law may or may not find it useful. No idea.
