Hi. When I posted my question today, I hadn't bought an iPad. Now I have, and I found the answer in the box. There really is a USB port. It's the docking station connector.
I went to a local McDonald's to use their wi-fi to set up the iPad. Man, either this thing is slow, or Mac has a really slow server.
I was hoping I could use iTunes to buy books, but I can't find a way to do it. Apparently you have to go online with the iPad.

No, there are apps that you can get books with. But you do need either wifi or purchase an iPad capable of data in order to do anything on the iPad.
