Thinking about buying one for my wife and kids.

Two questions:
1. Can someone watch video in portrait view if they want?
2. Will the ipad automatically scale video up to fill the whole screen even from vids burned or transferred from dvds to the pad?

1) Yes
2) Depends on the format that the video was encoded in. If it was encoded in 16x9 format, most likely not.

I believe there is a feature to tap or double tap the screen during a widescreen video - that will move to full page format. Of course some cropping will occur.
