Pages & Numbers Docs and iCloud

I have a lot of documents taking up memory on my iPad. Is it possible to archive some to the cloud where they would be available if needed, but not taking up iPad memory when not needed?

    Hi there! Welcome to iPF!

Go to Settings - iCloud, and make sure that "Documents & Data" is enabled. Then iWork uses iCloud to save documents. (And even better: syncs it between your devices, if you have more than one with the same Apple ID.)

Thanks J.A., but you didn't understand my question. I want to remove a document from the iPad, to save memory, but be able to get it back from the cloud if it is needed. I have the iCloud turned on, as you suggested, but this keeps all documents in sync, and loaded (read taking up memory), on all of my devices. How about a way to keep a document in the cloud only, and only downloading it when needed?

Deleting them from the app will delete them from iCloud and your other devices as well. Afaik iCloud doesn't work the way you need it.

I use Box.com to archive my iWorks documents. You can send documents to the app using sharing, just like DropBox (which you could also use), but Box.com also supports WebDAV, giving you more direct access to the service from the iWorks apps.

It's not syncing, so when you delete your local copy on the iPad it will still be at Box.com (or DropBox if you use it)

Basic DropBox and Box accounts are free and should hold a fair number of iWorks documents without needing to pay for extra space.

Dropbox and Box are good alternatives for what you want to achieve. If your documents contain sensitive information I would not rely on US based cloud services providers.
If you have to use cloud storage I would opt for European based providers or set up my own cloud storage.

Thanks to all for your suggestions, especially to twerppoet. Box.com offers a good solution. I like to way it interfaces with pages and numbers as a WebDAV server. Now I can archive all my older docs and delete them from my iPad.
