If still functional why not an extender for the port?
Background apps are hiding for good reason. Seek them out, close them. The world will be a better place.
I would check amazon for the tools. Make sure you get metal spluggers because those cheap plastic ones break easy. I just replaced my screen the other day and found out that iPad repair is fairly easy. It's difficult to open the screen up at first but be patient.

Get an expert to repair it. Yes I've opened my iPad 1 and injured myself doing it. Some of the little nooks used to keep the iPad closed were broken off and now it rattles when shaken. I watched people doing it on YouTube. Once opened a little bump can loosen wires and do a lot of damage. I would not recommend to anyone to do it yourself.
Or you can get a full service repair at a 3rd party company like RepairZoom. Even iFix it says this is a very high degree of difficulty repair and I've found RepairZoom to have the best deal out there - especially for iPad repairs.
