Developing for museums and Histoical Societies

I have been asked by a not for profit group who run a historical society if there is an affordable way to put content on ipads for visitors to learn more about objects and items in their centre.

As a newcomer to this site, which area do you think would be best to get discussions going in this area to see if anyone has any bright ideas for affordable packing and delivering of oral histories, video sotries and photo's in the one interface?

There is a Developer forum. That would be the natural place for your question. Perhaps a moderator could move it for you, if you ask nicely.

You should probably look into creating a web app. It's a specialized website using HTML5 that will work much like an app, and it can be reasonably compatible with most mobile platforms; letting you get a larger audience than just . The Museum probably already has a website hosted, so you could probably use the same server, much of the same content (simply repackaged for mobile devices), and you do not need to pay Apple or go through their approval process.

It would also be fairly easy to update using standard web development tools.

At the front of the museum you could have a sign that says go to this URL on your device. Heck you could even include a QR code for those who have apps to scan it.

And, of course you can have it on any Museum owned iPads you have.

The iPad will let people save these web apps to their home screen. Something they may want to do if they are frequent visitors, or just want to be able to review their experience later. You can even provide instructions on the site for them.

And that is all I can tell you, since I don't have the skills to do any of it myself.

    Good Luck.
