    Apps Won't Rotate

I'm working with my new iPad on it's side supported by a case while I search for apps on my laptop.
Every now and then I get an app that won't rotate to it's correct position, the chess game I just downloaded will only work when the ipad is pointed upwards.
While this is not a major problem, the ipad will be maily used hand held and pointed upwards, I wondered if there was a fix for this.

Some apps have orientation locked on a certain position, it's nothing that can be fixed.
It doesn't matter what orientation you currently have the iPad, the app will always open in that position. It will only rotate 180º.

The other poster's advice is correct. Some apps are stuck in portrait or landscape mode. Some won't even rotate at all (an issue I have with dream heights).

    And another thing.....
How do some of these apps get off advertising themselves as "free" when all they are is a link to something that has to be paid for?
Newspapers and magazines are annoying me at the moment.

Edit:.... My App store icon has a number 1 in a red circle on it. Is it trying to tell me something, like I have one message?

This was very deceiving for me, too. I hate it how an e publication appears to be free because the app is free, but you must subscribe within the app for money. However, this is not the case all the time, as subscriptions for Engadget, for example, are free.
The number on the App Store icon indicates that you have an app update available. Open the App Store, and tap Updates in the bottom right hand corner. It is recommended that these updates are downloaded as soon as possible, as they can add features and fix bugs.
