    Noobie here; am looking for a reliable player that will allow me to view AVI's, MKV's, etc.

    OPlayerHD might do the job for you. It has a Lite version that you can try before spending the $4.99 on the full version

    GPlayer is worth a look. It presents a web page to your desktop machine's browser, with a drag and drop target to send movies to the iPad via wifi without iTunes. I just watched a 720p MKV movie, and it was flawless. Dunno if it's still free.
