Purchased the iPad 1 To work off of, Any suggestions for word and excell For me

There is no Excel or Word app for the iPad. There are several app with limited compatibility. They work fine as long as you are not after the more powerful and/or esoteric Office functions. Here are two reviews of the more popular apps. They are getting a bit dated, but still reasonably accurate.
