Apple reviewer system has a serious flaw.
Is it just me or most reviews in the Apple store are not helpful enough?
I don't mean the top reviews but if you dig deeper and read the reviews, specially the 1 and 5 star reviews, most of them look like they're written our of spite or simply because they were forced to
The most helpful reviews seems to be the 2 to 4 star reviews, occasionally you find a 1 and 5 star reviews that really REVEALS what is to like and why something doesn't work. However, ALL of them have the same weight in the app's ratings.
I've seen good 0apps with overwhelmingly bad reviews. Simply because there's an overwhelming number of people who don't take the time to understand the software or hardware: for exemple, we all know that the GPS works with much more precision on the iPad 3G, but that is a fact that most reviewers omit when they review GPS software. Some photography tools can be tricky to use, and yet people give one star and say: "it sucks". Well, care to elaborate?
So yeah, some reviews can be really lame, hateful, vague, unhelpful or simply just annoying. We should be able to access the apps overall stars discounting bad reviews.
I propose we should write Apple collectively and suggest some upgrades. Maybe somebody can hear a big forum such as this.
MY OWN suggestion: they should put people's names/nick names and link to OTHER reviews from the same person (like Amazon does), so that you can check how serious that person is and what her interests are.
In addition, you should be able to blacklist some reviewers (reviews from employees or for instance anybody under 18, or somebody you simply strongly disagree with).
Somebody who posts reviews only on games can be an useful expert. Same with photography apps or cookbooks. Someone could perhaps earn recognition for that (Voted Most Helpful reviewer in a category, or what not). Somebody who only post reviews for apps from the same soft house should be immediately banned. And so on.
What do you guys think?
