Disregard this statement, as most third party apps play xvid and divx plus plenty of other common formats like mkv without any issues. Sure, you can convert all your files to mp4 iPad compatible, but that can be a lot of work if you have a lot of files to convert. I believe people should do what is best for them, and be aware of all the options.

i can see all the recommendations for avi player which are great but i still cant put avi files into my itunes library and as such presumably cant play them through library in the player? how do you guys get asround this ?

You don't need to import into your iTunes library because you are using a third party app. Check the app's help menu for the various methods available to import your files. An app can use any one or more of the following:
- iTunes file transfer
- wifi transfer via web browser
- direct connection to shared drive or NAS server/media server
- cloud storage access

I'm sure there are some other methods, but as I said, it all depends on the app being used.

I just downloaded Azul but it didn't support AC3 & E-AC3 audio codec resulting in sound lost in some videos mostly on .AVI videos..

Any help?

Try AvPlayerHD they are the only ones that i am aware of that have got the AC3 codec license sorted.

If you know how to use the FFMPEG tools (quite easy) you can convert the AC3 track to AAC without reencoding the entire file. Cheaper than purchasing another player.

you can not do that. iPad plays mp4

AAC is a version, variation, or subset of mp4 (depending on how you look at it).
