Can't connect to login type wifi networks

Was trying to connect my wife's ipad to an unsecured wifi network of the type that requires one to login with their browser before being really connected. Worked great on my android phone, but several tries on the pad got me nothing. Not only did Safari not automatically come on the login page, but manually opening safari showed no login page, even after closing all tabs and trying anew. Anyone know how to do this? We're driving cross country soon and many hotels use this wifi scheme. BTW I was trying to log on to that network because I'd emailed photos to my phone after the pad's blue tooth couldn't find the photo printer in Walmart... Sheeeesh
