Every time I open the amazon App I get the above message any ideas what it meanness? Am I right in thinking that when I press the Home button that closes down the App? I am still learning so any info is greatly received.

Normally this would mean that you Internet connection is very slow but if it's only happening on this app you should close the app completely. Just pressing the home button does not close an app, it stays open and ready to use in the multi task bar.
To close it completely, from the home screen do the four finger swipe up or double press the home button to reveal your multi task bar. These are all the apps that you have opened at one time. Long press the app until it jiggles and a red minus sign will appear above it. Press the minus sign, this will close the app, not delete it, now press the home button to return to your screen. It's also a good idea to close all these apps, as it helps the iPad run smoothly, let us know how you go.

Struggling I get cross on the said app when I go through the procedure no other app has the cross as they have when deleting one. Will

You only need to long press one app in the multi task bar and all apps here should then have the red minus sign. Black crosses only appear on the main screen when deleting apps. If your apps are not getting the minus sign, a reset of your iPad would be the step to take.

Hold the power off button and the home button simultaneously, keep holding them in and you will see the power off slide appear and disappear, wait until you see the Apple logo appear before releasing the buttons. It will take a little longer for your iPad to start. Let us know how you go.
