If you jailbreak your device, you are able to use the Camera Connection kit to connect USB thumb drives, although the vast majority of USB drives draw too much power from the iPad to be supported. Externally powered USB drives are not a problem however. The CCK also comes with a SD Card reader, and that can be used without any issues and provides cheap 32GB storage options using SD Cards.
