I have an Epson wireless printer that works with desktop and laptop, downloaded the Epson printer app from Apple store on my iphone 4 and the new ipad (3) and it works great on both of them also.
If you have a Netgear router, you can download a program form their website called "Netgear Genie" that turns any networked printer into an AirPrint printer. Hope this helps!

I purchased my iPad (original) in December 2010 and wanted to know how I could print something from my iPad (I just purchased the new iPad - wife uses my original) to my Lexmark C500 colour lazer which is USB. I found a small application called FingerPrint which is a product of a company called Collobos (www.collobos.com) and sells for under US$20.00. Once FingerPrint has been installed on your PC, your default printer will be recognized by your iPad. Printing stuff off your iPad will only work if your computer is turned on.
Sure beats buying a new printer!
