You have accidentily engaged mute. Contrary to what you might think, mute does not stop ALL sounds. System sounds remain on, only the app sounds are muted.
You either need to slide the side switch on the iPad, or if you have configured that for rotation lock in settings, you need to double tap home, swipe the icons to the right, and click the "mute" button soft key on the far left.
