Playing avi movies on iPad 3

I would like recommend AVPlayerHD, plays all video files on it, plus the built in wifi transfer is great to have if you are traveling and don't have access to your iTunes PC.

AVI is just a container, there are multiple differing codecs that can be used within an AVI file. I would guess the AVI on a camera may be a more uncompressed version, not the more common divx or xvid codecs commonly used today. My recommendation would be to convert these files for playing on the iPad.

The iPad does support AVI video when it is "Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format" (Refer to Apple - The new iPad - View all the technical specifications.)

Generally, camera videos in AVI are mostly M-JPEG encoded and are naturally supported by iPad. But lots of AVI videos are DivX encoded. DivX AVI videos need to be converted to H.264 mp4 if you'd like to put them to iPad.

Back to the question about the Nikkon, in all the literature, it does not go any deeper other than saying AVI, so without having an actual file to inspect it is hard to say what the internal codec is.

Katsura, I take it you used the file as is, with any editing or conversions when bringing it through your PC? You don't specifically say how you transferred it?

Thanks.... I transferred them from iphoto via itunes on my mac. Sounds as if I need to convert them first.
